I recently inherited my wife's old mid-2010 (7,1), which I'm in the process of upgrading. I'm relatively unfamiliar with Macbooks, and I was wondering about setting it up in ways similar to my other machines running Linux.

I have FileVault turned on, but I was wondering if it's possible to take the security one step further by mounting the boot volume on a usb or sd card. That way the machine would only boot if the said volume was inserted AND the correct password was provided.

I'm not sure if macOS has a utility for achieving this, or if it can be setup this way at all. It appears that Apple's "Fusion Drives" implement a logical volume management scheme that is presumable capable of this

I live in Korea, and I'm trying to find some privacy-conscious services, communities, or resources in any form that are based in Korea or specific to Korean privacy issues.

Korea has a notorious cyber-culture, and I'm curious what people are doing to get around some of the obstacles that exist. Also, I'm really interested to support local open-source services and initiatives, but I haven't had much luck searching for them.

I've been discussing the topic of privacy with friends and family lately, after just recently realizing how ambivalent I had been about it. A friend of mine seems to think that it's useless to seek privacy online, but the reasons he cites are quite shocking if true. I'm definitely no expert when it comes to IT, but I'm not clueless either. However, I am not informed enough about the current state of technology--particularly concerning tracking--to know how true my friend's claims are. I was hoping some of you could give me perspective on what he's been talking about.

First, he claims that, no matter what, our devices are communicating with all other devices within our proximity and leakin

I've been trying to make more privacy-conscious choices concerning the services I use online, but, as you all know, there are certain aspects of Korea's cyber-culture that are privacy and/or security nightmares. I'm hoping to find some Korean resources in order to stay abreast of issues specific to the situation here and glean some insight on how to optimize privacy despite the various obstacles that exist.

Does anyone know of some Korean blogs, forums (or even services) that deal with privacy specifically? Or even privacy activism communities (on- or offline)? Thanks!

For the past few nights, bedtime has been gruesome with my 23-month old. She is a pretty good sleeper, and had recently gotten into a really nice bedtime routine, but she is in the habit of laying on top of us to fall asleep. I mean, she basically hugs us and rests her face next to ours. She mostly does this just to fall asleep, and maybe once a few hours before waking up. But she is getting way too big to be doing that! My wife who is rather short and petite has an especially hard time with it.

The thing is, if we don’t allow her to lay on top of us at bedtime, she goes into the most hellish of tantrums. She cries frantically and can’t be consoled except by being embraced one way or anoth

My friend had purchased this manual which requires special software to view (due to DRM). Somehow in the process of tethering and untethering the material to his device, the DRM software malfunctioned (at least that's his guess), and now the manual he legitimately purchased is no longer usable.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Edit: [Solved] Thank you!

I installed HidemeX to hide all of the apps on the springboard that I don't want my toddler to access, which included Settings.app. I didn't realize that these apps would also be hidden from spotlight, and so I have no way to access the settings, cydia, etc.

Is there a way to disable this tweak before kickstarting the semi-tethered jailbreak? (Phoenix iOS 9.3.5) I feel like I dug myself into a hole I can't climb out of. Will I have to just reset all the iPad settings?

I have a few questions, but I'm not quite sure how to ask them. (Sorry if it's a little long!)

  • How much does one's dissertation topic determine what sorts of opportunities in academia one can pursue post-doc?

  • Is it more desirable to be a total expert on a specific topic, or is it better to have a more diversified, interdisciplinary background?

I've hit a brick wall now that I have begun drafting an official research proposal for my dissertation. There are plenty of potential research topics that interest me, but it's occurred to me that I need to somehow demonstrate that I'm an asset to prospective "employers." I'm not sure if it's better to just focus on becoming an expert about ever

After watching yesterday's video, I wanted to suggest that making content for kids might be a comfortable alternative for you guys. I'm sure you guys could finds ways of having fun and being goofy that would be enjoyable and appropriate for kids to watch, but it would also be kind of therapeutic. Cynicism and irony don't feature prominently in the world of children, and making content for younger viewers might be a nice way to escape or even just balance out those aspects of the adult media ethos that ail you most.

I mean, they make cardigans for thic neighbors too...

What skills, methods, techniques, etc. are most useful in the process of actually doing philosophical research? Are there any unique to philosophy?

As a graduate student, I’ve felt like it is taken for granted in our department that we know how to “research,” and receive little guidance in comparison to other majors, such as those in the social sciences.

How does one go about finding something worth saying? I always have lots of ideas and hunches that I’m pursuing, but despite that pursuit of perspective being fulfilling in itself, I find it hard to formally cultivate them so that they are academically sound/relevant.

Any tips for this graduate student adrift? Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for people to regularly jam and even write songs or perform with. I am a full-time doctoral student and a father, so I've recently gotten out of practice, but I'm re-prioritizing around what was always my greatest passion: music!

I've played guitar and other stringed things for almost twenty years, and lately I've been trying to improve my piano game a little more. I've played in various bands and played all kinds of music, but my main interests are songwriting and improvisation, regardless of style. I want to get better at my craft.

I want to find other musicians to cultivate musical ideas with!

I live in Incheon and work/study in Seoul (around Hongdae/Shinchon). I get around
