Ok folks, here’s a conundrum for a snowy day: I have a 2025 Niro PHEV and have CarPlay enabled for my iPhone 17 Pro. It works fine to play music from the phone through the car stereo.

BUT when I use a navigation app on the phone (Apple Maps or Google Maps) there is NO SOUND giving turn-by-turn directions. No sound from the phone, no sound through the car sound system.

The onboard navigation works fine, audio and all, but I prefer the navigation from the phone.

When I turn off Bluetooth, the audio directions play fine from the phone.

I’d like to hear the turn-by-turn directions through the car sound system (preferred) or, failing that, be able to hear them from the phone without ha

I was just in a Panera in Virginia, where there’s a long-standing “right to work” law that weakens labor unions. There has been recent talk about repealing this law, as the Dems have gained power in the state government. I have only a vague sense of the status of all this, as I haven’t followed the issue closely.

Just now I walked past the bulletin board that usually has notices for community events and whatnot — it has been cleaned out and it’s dominated by a big poster with the headline “don’t let them take away your right to work” or words to that effect. I didn’t examine it closely. Since “right to work” has long been code for “squelch the unions” I assume this is what it’s about.

This is one of those hippie laundry-sheet vendors, evidently … but the stain spray has some enzymes that could be worthwhile for spot treatment, especially if your main wash recipe already has lipase. I found it works all right, before I learned about targeting particular issues with the right enzyme.

The ingredient lists don’t tell much about enzyme dosage, however.

INGREDIENTS Deionized Water, Functionalized Alkyl Polyglucoside, Protease, Amylase, Pectinase, Mannanase, Cellulase, Propanediol, Glycerin, Potassium Citrate, L Arginine, Sclerotium Gum, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Citrate

US$12.80 for 16 oz at the moment.

This is not to disparage the folks who guess at how to spell this word … it’s an odd word if you aren’t used to it, and especially if you have only heard your band director speak it. I’m here to help.

You know the French word “Bouche” (mouth)? Yeah. It’s right there in the middle of “embouchure” for a reason.

I think of “embouchure” as meaning “mouthment”. It’s the shape you make with your mouth.

That’s all. Carry on.

I have a 2025 Niro PHEV that I’m still getting used to. The manual insinuates that level 2 charging is better for the battery than trickle charging, but I can’t find any details on it. The implication seems to be that trickle charge is fine as a stopgap but it’s better to use level 2 as the routine charging option.

Anybody have some insight on this?

Also: is there a way to keep an eye on battery health, the way one can check it on an iPhone?

Thanks

Sorry for the lazy post. I’m replacing my 9-3 2.0T and would like to pass it along to someone in the simplest way possible. It’s got 130k miles, never wrecked, fresh state inspection, 6-speed gearbox shifts nicely. Plenty of power. I expected to get 4 years out of it when I bought it 12 years ago. Gas gauge is nonfunctional, sunroof motor is dead. The a/c works but seemed a little weak today. Body & leather seats in pretty decent condition — visible blemishes but no trauma. It’s just at that age where components can die on me and I’m not inclined to do the work of keeping up with it. I had the console ignition switch replaced a few years back, and the main computer unit went bad a couple yea

I’m looking to replace 6 nasty old basement windows. (23 1/4” x 33" raw opening)

I plan to DIY one and if I fuck it up or if it’s too miserable, I’ll admit defeat and hire the job out. There are fewer sources to buy replacement windows than I’d like … Lowe’s and Home Despot are pretty much it. Most of the manufacturers want to sell you the installation.

I’m in eastern USA. Any ideas?

Thank you, knowledgeable people. Ignorant know-it-alls are also welcome to weigh in as usual.

Posting for others who may be searching about this problem:

I haven’t seen any other cases of this issue, but it’s been bedeviling me for a couple of years now. Occasionally ForScore will crash or freeze when I’m using the search bar. Often it crashes right as I click on “search”, before I enter anything. I upgraded to an iPad 10 and it persists. I found some errors in my indexing CSV files and fixed them, as described here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/forScore/comments/1cqgtmu/freezing_or_crashing_when_searching_possible_fix/

This seemed to improve things but not fix the issue.

I have read through the great resources here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pdf/comments/14vo8ap/books_and_other_resources_on_pdf/

but most of the tools listed seem way too technical and detailed. I’m not above using Terminal but I need a certain amount of hand-holding. I understand that the PDF is a complex beast.

My use case: I have a big ol’folder of sheet music PDFs from miscellaneous sources that I use in the iOS app ForScore. I’ve been trying to address an intermittent crashy crashy problem (when searching) and I’m pursuing the hypothesis that some of my PDFs of dubious origin might be the problem. Ar

Just a perennial peeve — when people post asking if a particular used saxophone is good (found at a thrift store, inherited, found in an abandoned castle, etc) it is common to see a reply advising the person to price in US$800 to US$1200 or more for an “overhaul” which usually entails all new pads and regulation materials, leveling the tone holes, swedging the keywork, replacing and adjusting springs, etc.

It is good to warn people that a used instrument might require some spendy servicing…

BUT

There is such a thing as a “get it into playing condition” service which might involve cleaning & lubing, replacing a few bad pads, checking to see that the action is moving correctly, updating
