After spending years patching and unpatching dwm to get it exactly how I wanted, I decided to just write my own window manager from scratch. The result is nwm, and I think some of you here will appreciate its approach.

The core philosophy is simple. nwm does window management and absolutely nothing else. There is no built-in bar, no font rendering, no drawing code, and no runtime configuration file. Everything is defined at compile time in a single, flat header file (nwm.h). The entire source code is around 1000 lines of strict POSIX C99, which means you can read the whole thing in one sitting and understand exactly what your WM is doing.

Why you might like it over dwm

Help needed: I want to replace video output in Linux with an AES-encrypted ASCII stream rendered directly in the terminal, but only after the frames are decoded from a custom kernel module that also translates the pixels into Morse code, then back into braille, and finally displays it in a TTY that pretends to be a Wayland compositor.

Requirements:

  1. Zero GPU usage.

  2. Must work on Arch, Alpine, and ideally my toaster.

  3. Audio should be routed through /dev/null.

  4. The ASCII art must be encrypted in real time with AES-256-GCM, but the key should be derived from my RAM usage.

  5. Bonus points if the output can be piped into sudo without asking for a password and also compile itself in
