Moms are away for the night. It's just polysprog and me for dinner.

Three is old enough. It's time she be introduced to the glory that is Waffle House.

That is all.

Kid: I picked out my Elsa shirt, daddy!
Me: Great choice! You also need pants.
Kid: I also... I els.. I Elsa... I ELSA need pants!

And she gave me back MY face that I make when I think I've been clever.

Then she proudly went around the house retelling her joke. "I Elsa need pants! Dass my joke!"

I didn't know it, but I've been waiting for this day my whole life.

I (41 straight poly cis-M) was out at a restaurant with my partners and our 2 year old daughter. The hostess was a young transwoman. She did the hostess thing, walked us to a table, told us our server would be right there, etc. All good.

Later in the meal, my daughter saw her walk by the table and said, "Daddy is that a girl?"

I said, hoping very much that it would settle it, "Yep! That's a girl!"

She said, loudly, "No I think that's a boy."

Many things in my brief experience as a parent have challenged my degree of preparation, but I wasn't really ready to answer that well. I said something about how there are all kinds of people in the world, who look all different kinds of ways,

Here's what we're doing: We've taken on an existing dad-related Slack group called SlackDads as the official chat partner of r/predaddit!

SlackDads' organizer jonathan is a member here at r/predaddit (under the handle u/YuppyFarmer), and is excited to offer us a realtime chat home. They have channels for lots of post-predad topics too, and many full-bird-dad members who can offer advice from the other side.

To join, go to http://www.slackdads.com and request an invitation. The invitation email will walk you through setting up Slack if you don't already use it.

Our strong suggestion is that you register with the same username that you use to post here, so everyone can tell who's who.

Several mid-size to big reddits have IRC channels or other chat tools that they use as a realtime channel for their community. Since we're now officially mid-size, the mods have been kicking the idea around. We wondered if anyone would use it. One mod suggested IRC, and another proposed setting up a Slack channel.

What we'd like to hear from you is:

  1. Do you think you would use a predaddit chat?
  2. Separate from how much you (or anyone) would use it, would its existence be useful to you? In other words, if only a couple people were ever on it at a time, would it still be of value to you when you were one of those people?
  3. Do you have a preference between Slack and IRC?

A few things are changing here on r/predaddit, so we can better support our members in their transition toward dadhood.

First: We're opening this subreddit's wiki, and populating it with information and advice gleaned from contributions on this sub over the last several years. If you look in there, you'll see the framework of what it's eventually going to be. There's a lot in it already, and a whole lot yet to come. We hope you enjoy it, and that present and future predads find it useful and informative. There are lots of "So Yer Gonna Dad" books out there, but we want to do this with a particularly r/predaddit style, drawing on the archiv

Driving in the car yesterday, the 18 month old started fussing and tugging at her car seat straps and shouting "Buckah! Buckah!", which is toddlish for "Buckled! I'm being restrained against my will! The injustice! A plague on all your houses!"

So I redirected into a conversation about being buckled, and how important it is to be safely buckled in the car. And she started asking about if everyone else is buckled? Yes, Daddy's buckled. Mommy's buckled. Grandma and Grandpa, yes, when they get in the car, they're buckled. Uncle Willy is buckled. Yes cousin Charlie is buckled. Yes your day care buddy David is buckled. Oy.

So I said, "Hey kid! If we had a chicken in the car, you know what they'

Anyone know if they're "unnecessary but allowed", or if I'm going to have syntax errors on like 60% of my lines of code?
