Most writing about nightmares focuses on the person having them. The racing heart. The replayed memory. The dread of falling asleep again.

But there is almost always someone else in the room. A partner lying still in the dark, deciding whether to wake them. A parent listening to the monitor, already half out of bed. A sibling on the other side of a thin wall who has learned to recognise the sound.

This story is for them.

The 3 a.m. calculation

If you have ever shared a bed with someone who has nightmares, you know the calculation. They start to move. Their breathing changes. Maybe they make a sound that is not quite a word. And in those few seconds you have to decide: do I wake them up

Hi all!

We've been researching nightmares and night terrors using wearable sleep tracking data. We've now tracked over 3,000 hours of sleep across 200+ users and wanted to share some patterns we're seeing.

59% of sessions show nightmare-like activity, and 18% involve multiple episodes in a single night. Over 60% of users come back after their first night, which tells us people are finding value in monitoring their sleep.

Curious if this lines up with your experience. Are your nightmares usually clustered together or spread across the night? Do you have nightmares every night? And for those who track their sleep in any way, has having data on your nights changed how you think about or mana

Hi everyone,

We've built an app called SleepSafe that detects nightmares and night terrors in real time using Apple Watch sensors and machine learning, and gently intervenes with soft haptic taps on your wrist to guide you back to peaceful sleep. We've now had over 20 users with PTSD tracking their sleep and nightmares across 500+ hours, and I wanted to share what we're learning, including where we're getting it wrong.

Users with PTSD are sticking with the app significantly more than our baseline group. 80% of PTSD users came back after 2+ nights, compared to 55% of baseline users (150+). That trend holds as usa
