I searched and couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for so I’m creating this post instead.

Does anyone happen to understand the psychology or what is happening mentally to the person that: -falls for gift card scam to the tune of 100k, gets found out by family, helped to report, be shown scam, etc -change phone numbers, lock down identity as best as possible -neurologist said no dementia signs at time -fall back into same scam again, go through same song and dance with family -go to therapy for this, gamblers anon, then fall back into same scam again

Scammers are not threatening other than “not receiving funds/earnings”

I’ve been searching this sub and the internet and cannot quite exactly find what I’m looking for here.

For context:

My uncle had very severe intellectual disabilities, so my grandparents made the choice to put him in a group home for better quality of life for him. They visited and kept up with things. He remained there for his entire life.

Throughout this time, the state and guardianship would contact family with updates, subsequently my mom as she ended up with POA for my grandparents.

He unfortunately passed away in March (2023), had a funeral and we did not find out he was ill nor even deceased until my aunt (by marriage) received a very poorly written letter informing her

My husband just turned to me and said “she looks like she’s been taxidermied and came back to life”

I really wish I shared more of his commentary throughout this 90 day rabbit hole we started during the initial lockdown…

How do you get yourself to pause or manage responding quickly/cutting people off and/or reacting angrily?

I sometimes don’t realize my tone and I don’t mean to cut anyone off or be rude. I talked about it at length with my therapist and I just can’t seem to get it together, it’s super frustrating.

Anyone else?
