This might be a silly question, but I’m going to Miami for the first time in a couple of weeks and would love some suggestions on where to go, both for wide and curated tasing options (bar(s)), and bottle shops.

On one hand I imagine every liquor store will have a better selection than most places in the PNW, but if I want to cast the widest net or see the broadest representation of regions, that would be wonderful to help me focus on a brief trip.

Mostly I’m hoping to find stuff I can’t find at home, though I’d also be glad to know about any spots, bars or retail, that would be likely to carry Alembique Serrano. I’m meeting a Mexican friend there who only knows Spanish style rums from Cub

I’m going to batch some Vespers for a gathering tomorrow. One version will be the traditional spec (using Lillet Blanc), and the other will be the same spec but using olive oil fat washes of the same gin and vodka.

Obviously chilling won’t matter since i can keep these batches overnight in the fridge and keep it in the freezer at the gathering.

20% seems to be a number that’s pretty common for batching spirit forward cocktails, but I’ve never actually measured by volume myself (these aren’t drinks i make too often).

Would anyone here suggest a different number?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I’d be interested bars or stores with good rum selections, or that would be likely to have options not available in the PNW.

If you know of anything in Dallas/Fort Worth I’d be grateful for recommendations!

In a couple of weeks I’m going to be in Boston, Burlington VT, and Albany and Hudson NY for about 10 days, and will have plenty of time to make well advised stops.

If anyone has suggestions for bottle shops with good rum selections, or bars that focus on rum, I’d be glad to know about them. I’m always on the hunt for things I can’t find in the PNW.

Thanks in advance!

i've got a moderately tiki themed birthday party coming up and am going to make a punch. i've done a couple so far across the last year, and have only used fresh pressed citrus, but am wondering what experience this sub might be able to speak to about using superjuice. i've made a couple of batches of superjuice since making my last punch, and had frankly great results with individual cocktails, but am wondering if it's worth a try at the scale of a punch.

anyone have any thoughts?

a friend who does a fair amount of hiking scored the lottery for mid July for a party of 4 (she entered as a favor to me) into the Core Zone and has decided she wants to make this her first backpacking adventure. it will also by my partner's first, though she and i do a lot of hiking.

the other two of us have done lots of backpacking, and a number of trips together. between the two of us we have most of the gear that the party will need, and the few outlying items will be easy to get, and pack weights won't be too bad.

my original idea, since there are two first timers, was for us to go in from the east, take the more gradual approach up to the the top of Aasgard Pass, and just go back the

waited too long to pull the trigger, now they're not being restocked.

let me know if you have a pair in new or near new condition and would be open to parting with them.

i'm realizing that i may have missed the boat entirely by not getting a particular color that i wanted of my favorite Outlier pants. i thought the Futureslimworks would be be restocked, but am hearing now that they're discontinued. this is a huge bummer, but such is life, i suppose.

there's a color i want but don't have, and it's sold out in my size (32), and the next size up that's still available is 34.

does anyone have experience getting this particular pant taken in? i've got a pretty skilled taylor, i've just never had this particular work done before.

any insights would be appreciated, including if you think i'm wrong about the discontinuance!

i've got a set of unused MSR EVO Tails that i don't need. i returned my EVO snowshoes before using them when Lightning Ascent's came back into stock.

if those are of any interest, i'd be happy to get them to a home where they'll be used. if you're in the PDX area, we could orchestrate a handoff, but if that doesn't pan out, i'd be happy to ship them to someone for the price of postage.

i appreciate everything i learn on this sub, and on this +100 degree day, i'm looking forward to when the snow starts falling again!

considering going up into the area between Middle Sister and Little Brother this weekend, but am hearing mixed reports on snow pack up there.

anyone have any recent intel?

i tested shaken specs, landing on Hamilton 86 (as was suggested here a couple of times) for the rum.

using Aviation for the gin, and Ararat 5 year for the brandy.

i'm following the Smuggler's cove recipe, but cut the sugar in my test specs, so am going to probably cut it a bit more for scaling, and add as necessary, prioritizing orgeat over the Dem (using the SC spec for the Dem).

i've got the booze batched and in a freezer to aid with chilling for service, am going to press the citrus (which is also already on chill in a refrigerator) just before mixing, and have a bit more of everything on hand to add, wee bits at a time, to dial it in.

i'm most concerned with dilution. i've never made

I scored permits in the lottery for dates I put in randomly, and I don't think I'm going to claim them.

Every bit of information I've seen since "winning" the lottery suggests that going out into the Core Zone on May 30th will be something between impossible and highly unwise.

Snow has been above average this year, and I don't have a snow conditions skill set, so I'm guessing I should let this pass.

If anyone sees any flaws in this analysis, I'd love to hear a critique. It's a bucket list destination, but I'm not gonna be stupid about it.

Thus far, my favorite rums tend to be high ester pot stilled Jamaican rums, but I have yet to try anything from Worthy Park aside from various Doctors Bird (my reigning champ), and nothing at all from Hampden Estate. I've tried Hamiltons, Appletons, and a few others, but want to branch out.

I'd love to know what y'all think I should prioritize from the rums in the photo. I can probably get one or two of those bottles, depending on which I choose.

Edit:

not sure why the photo didn't appear. in any case, the options in the photo are,

From Worthy Park:

  • 109 (Aged Blend, $30)
  • Madeira (cask aged 10 years, $88)
  • Port (cask aged 10 years, $88
  • Single Estate 2006 (aged 12 years, $145)
