I'm reading The Books of Babel by Josiah Bancroft, and each chapter starts with an excerpt from a book relevant to the current situation. Books such as "The Everyman's Guide to the Tower of Babel" or "Thruways and Right of Ways in the Silk Garden"
Another book that did this was Dune, with the Princess Irulan's "Manual of Muad'Dib" and others.
I'm enjoying this technique. It adds a little bit of flavor to the world and can set the tone for the upcoming chapter.
