r/CopperAgeComics is all about 80's comics. The Copper Age started in 1978 with the DC Implosion and Jim Shooter's ascension to Editor in Chief over at Marvel. At the same time the Independent Comics movement was being born with Dave Sim's Cerebus and the Pini's Elf Quest. It climaxed with the publication of the Watchmen and the Dark Knight of 1988 which was the springboard for the next age of comics that included mature, literate comics like Sandman and "dark", edgy comics like Spawn.

The Copper Age saw the rise of the Local Comic Shop which spurred on the Independent Comics movement highlighted by such books as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, American Flagg, and Nexus. We would also see many comics created for a more mature audience like the slice of life work in the Hernandez Bros. Love and Rockets, the irreverent and edgy work in Chester Brown's Yummy Fur and avant-garde, artsy work in RAW Magazine.

The most popular comics of the decade were Chris Claremont's X-Men and the Teen Titan's, while Frank Miller and Alan Moore were redefining comics with their work on Daredevil and the Swamp Thing. We would also see the rise of the grand X-Over event series like DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths and Marvel's Secret Wars.

At the end of the decade we would see a lot of the major players move on to new projects and new publishers. Alan Moore would start to self publish works like Numbers and Frank Miller would move on to Dark Horse Legends imprint where he would create his famous Sin City series. Other's would take up the torch in the new age like Grant Morrison with his Animal Man and Doom Patrol and Neil Gaiman's Sandman, while Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee and Rob Leifeld would become mega stars creating slick, edgy work on the Spider-man and X-Men titles and eventually start their own imprint, Image Comics.
