Welcome to English Haiku! This subreddit was made to foster an environment specific to English haikuists who are fairly knowledgeable about haiku. Don't worry if you aren't in the loop about haiku writing, as this subreddit will also aim to educate and foster a good collaborative community for haikuists of all levels.

A few things to know about haiku: 5-7-5 is traditional for Japanese haiku, but because of differences between English and Japanese 'syllables', English haiku tend to function best with fewer.

Other aspects are more important than syllable count: Meditation on a single moment, a moment found in nature, a seasonal reference, juxtaposition, an identification of the haikuist in nature, a clever twist through use of a breaking word. Of course not all of these need to be included, but the more the merrier!

If you have any questions about these aspects of haiku please feel free to message me directly!

Since haiku don't have (or need) titles, the haiku can be placed directly in the title of the submission. For example: first haiku line / second haiku line / third haiku line
