Hello dear materials scientists! My colleagues and I have started to prepare videos on YouTube about metallurgy and materials science because we saw the lack of this knowledge in academia and industry among materials scientists and non-materials scientists working with materials. The first video series “structural properties of materials” has been released. Please feel free to share with people who you think may need this information and feel free to send us feedback! You can also use it to brush up on the basics. Also, stay tuned for our upcoming videos on the “Mechanical Properties & Testing of Materials” and “Thermodynamics of Materials”

I'm pursuing my PhD in computer science, but my research project's application is materials science domain. So, it's hard for me to validate my hypotheses because I need to reach out to the domain experts.

In my research project we actually working on a tool that helps material scientists with more advanced literature search: it's like the Google Scholar but (1) the search results are enhanced with machine learning methods and LLMs, (2) we deliver additional domain-specific metadata.

I would be more than happy if you guys test it and leave your feedback below in the comments. Here is the link: https://lass-kg.demos.dice-research.org

My 8-year-old son (who is on the spectrum) asks so many questions and it used to work when he said "just ask your phone!" but he's been asking things way beyond what's googleable, like "how many atoms are in the Milky Way?" and he needs an answer. I've tried to piece things together by googling aspects of that (atoms in a cubic inch of carbon, # of planets in milky way, sizes of planets) and doing some math with him.

Last night the question was about glowsticks. He wanted to know if they'd last longer if they were kept cold or hot. Google said cold. He wanted to know how many degrees made how much difference. What if they weren't encased in plastic? What if it was metal (and which m

I have been building an application called Arcte for a while now, mostly in my own free time as a tool to aid my own research needs. I decided to post about it here in case others find use for it.

Arcte is a free (and open-source) GUI application for crystallographic visualization and diffraction calculations. Similar commercial products like CrystalMaker, JEMS, Jade, etc., are inevitably more feature-rich than Arcte (I am only 1 developer after all) - but are also less accessible to the individual.

Much of my own work involves (transmission) electron microscopy; being able open a CIF file and do diffraction/crystallographic calculations while in front of the TEM or at home constitutes m

Good day everyone! I'm part of an org hosting an event this Saturday, April 23, wherein we invite qualified materials scientist speakers to talk about an assigned theme. Unfortunately, our 2nd speaker cancelled because someone in their family died.

I was hoping if there is anyone out here who is willing to fill up for our 2nd speaker on such a short notice. Our 2nd speaker's topic is 'Hot Topics for MSE Research'. I know it's vague which only means the speaker is free to choose what they will discuss.

I'm in my 3rd year of Materials Engineering from the University of the Philippines and we can promise a token of appreciation plus an Amazon voucher. It's not much but hopefully someone quali

Hi! Lately, I’ve come across many questions about how and where materials properties, data/datasets related to materials can be found. This is also one of the challenges of mine, who searches dataset for machine learning practices.. So, I’ve prepared a list of resources where you can find several materials data.

I hope it will help those who are also struggling with this. I ‘d appreciate if anyone would like to add new ones!
