This is an English translation done in May, 2019 of Jacques Ellul's essay from 1980, L’idéologie du travail. Ellul critiques both the general trend from the 17th century on to attribute to work some profound spiritual, ennobling value as well as Marx's specific adoption of this attitude in service of his own theory of historical materialism.
