Star Trek - Will and Troi

The gentle hum of the Enterprise seemed to vibrate with a different kind of energy as the crew prepared for shore leave. For months, they had been on edge, navigating treacherous space anomalies, tense diplomatic negotiations, and far too many hours on duty without a break. But now, they were heading to Marlonia IV, a planet renowned for its stunning turquoise seas, warm climate, and lush landscapes. It was the kind of place that officers whispered about in the mess hall, a rare gem of a destination where Starfleet personnel could unwind.

Commander William Riker, seated in his quarters, looked out at the viewport, lost in thought. His reflection stared back at him, and for once, the confident smile that often graced his features was absent. This shore leave was more than just a break for him; it was an opportunity.

For years, he had danced around his feelings for Counselor Deanna Troi. They shared a deep connection, forged during their time on Betazed and strengthened through their shared experiences on the Enterprise. But the emotional barriers had always remained. There were rules, and there was history. And yet, no matter how many times he convinced himself that their relationship was best left as it was, the truth gnawed at him. He cared for her. More than he ever admitted.

She knows, Will thought. She has to. Being half-Betazoid, Deanna could sense emotions, could read people better than anyone on the ship. But knowing someone’s feelings and having them laid out plainly were two very different things.

The door chime broke his reverie.

“Come in,” Riker called, standing up.

The doors slid open, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard entered, his expression as calm and dignified as ever.

“Commander,” Picard began, “I wanted to ensure you’re set for your shore leave. It seems half the crew has already left for the transport.”

Riker smiled. “I’m ready, Captain. Looking forward to a break.”

Picard gave a small nod. “As am I. Marlonia IV promises to be quite... restful. A rarity.”

Riker sensed there was something more. “Something on your mind, sir?”

The captain’s eyes flickered with amusement. “I can’t help but notice you’ve requested leave at the same time as Counselor Troi.”

Riker shrugged, though his grin betrayed him. “Just a coincidence, Captain.”

Picard chuckled softly, his usual stoicism lightened by the moment. “Indeed. Well, I trust you’ll make good use of the opportunity. Enjoy yourself, Number One.”

As Picard turned to leave, Riker's smile faded slightly. He couldn’t avoid it any longer. It was time.

The beaches of Marlonia IV were everything the crew had dreamed of and more. Waves lapped gently against the shore, their turquoise hues shimmering under the bright sun. The breeze carried the sweet scent of tropical flowers, and the warm sand felt like a luxurious escape from the cold, metallic floors of the Enterprise.

Will Riker stood barefoot, the ocean gently caressing his feet. He had wandered down the beach, away from the others. His thoughts were on Deanna, who had joined a group of crew members further down the shore. Her laughter carried over the wind, light and infectious, as she chatted with Dr. Crusher and a few others.

He watched her for a moment, admiring her effortless grace. Deanna was wearing a flowing sundress, her dark curls tumbling down her back. She looked as radiant as ever, and Riker’s heart skipped a beat. He had rehearsed what he was going to say a thousand times in his head, but now that the moment was close, doubt began to creep in.

Just go, Will. You’ve fought Romulans with less hesitation.

Taking a deep breath, he began walking toward her. As if sensing his approach, Deanna turned, her dark eyes meeting his with that knowing look she always had. She gave him a soft smile, the kind that always put him at ease, and excused herself from the group.

"Will," she greeted him, her voice warm. "I was wondering when you’d stop pretending not to notice me."

Riker chuckled. “I wasn’t pretending. I just thought I’d admire the scenery for a bit.”

“Sure,” she teased, but there was no malice in her tone, only that gentle playfulness she reserved for him.

They walked side by side down the shoreline, the sounds of the waves filling the silence between them. It was a comfortable silence, one they had shared many times before, but today it felt different. He was hyper-aware of every step, every glance, every heartbeat.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Riker stopped. Deanna paused beside him, her brow furrowing slightly in concern.

“Will, is something wrong?”

Riker took a deep breath and turned to face her. “Deanna, there’s something I need to say. Something I should’ve said a long time ago.”

She tilted her head slightly, her eyes searching his face. He knew she could feel his nervousness, his hesitation.

“We’ve been through a lot together,” Riker began. “And I’ve always appreciated our connection, the bond we share. But there’s more to it than that. I’ve tried to keep things professional, to respect our history, but I can’t keep ignoring how I feel.”

Her expression softened, and Riker saw the flicker of emotion in her eyes. But she didn’t interrupt, allowing him to continue.

“I care about you, Deanna. More than as a friend, more than as a colleague. I’ve cared about you for a long time, but I never had the courage to say it out loud. I guess I was afraid... afraid that it might change things, or worse, that you didn’t feel the same way.”

Deanna’s lips parted, but she didn’t speak. She simply watched him, her eyes shimmering with something unreadable.

“So, there it is,” Riker said, his voice quieter now. “I’m laying it all out. I love you, Deanna. I’ve loved you since Betazed, and I don’t think I ever stopped. I don’t want to keep pretending like these feelings don’t exist.”

There was a long pause, and for a moment, Riker feared he had miscalculated. Maybe she had moved on, maybe their connection wasn’t what he thought it was.

But then, Deanna stepped closer, her hand reaching for his. She smiled softly, her thumb brushing against his palm.

“Will, you think I didn’t know?” she said, her voice gentle and amused. “I’ve always known. I just needed to wait for you to be ready.”

Riker blinked, surprised, and then a chuckle escaped him, full of relief. “I guess that’s the Betazoid in you.”

Deanna laughed, the sound like music to his ears. “Partially, yes. But it’s also because I know you, Will. And I love you, too. I always have.”

Riker’s heart swelled as the words he had longed to hear washed over him. For the first time in years, the weight of his unspoken feelings lifted. He pulled her into a gentle embrace, the sound of the waves crashing behind them.

As they stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, the turquoise seas of Marlonia IV glistened under the sun, a perfect backdrop for the beginning of a new chapter in their lives—one they had both been waiting for, but only now were ready to embrace.
