I absorb external descriptions of myself and act them out. How do I stop?
If this is the incorrect subreddit, please tell me and I will remove the post.
But yeah - the title. This occurs specifically in situations others interpret as emotional. I'm inclined towards analyzing things and getting very into it because I have a lot to say. People will tell me I project a particular emotion. For example, something like "you sound angry / annoyed / hurt." In my mind, I just go, "Okay" and assume that's what I was acting like. Even though the conclusion they jump to confuse me because it's like I don't "feel" in my analysis moments.
It has affected my ability to understand romantic feelings. When a person's behavior bothers me, I talk about it in depth because I have to expel my criticisms. When it's a person of the opposite gender, I'm asked if I have feelings for that person. I would research the signs of having a crush on someone. I would then begin to check for these signs in myself. I found myself miming some of it. Then I have an internal struggle with myself about whether or not I feel this way. I eventually concede because that's how it plays out on television. The hate-to-love trope.
I have only recently discovered that I do this. So far, I have been trying to look within when I catch myself absorbing descriptions and see if it's really something I feel. But I look inside myself and it's unclear.
