4GB of Video Memory

I have some RAM coming in the mail tomorrow and was going to get my BIOS flashed so I can mess with the BIOS on my ONYX. I have seen many people change their video memory amount from 2GB to 4GB. Im curious as to why only 4GB instead of 6GB or 8GB? Im not sure how the video ram works but figured someone might know.
