How stolen base props actually work, and when they're worth a bet
Quick primer since this comes up a lot.
A stolen base prop is just a yes/no on whether a player steals a base in a game. The common market is "to steal a base," which pays if they get one or more. A caught stealing does not count, so if your guy gets thrown out, it grades as a loss even though he tried.
When are these worth it? Three things have to line up:
- The runner is actually fast and aggressive (high steal-attempt rate, not just fast).
- The pitcher is slow to the plate, which gives the runner a jump.
- The catcher has a weak arm (slow pop time).
When all three hit at once, a fast runner vs a slow pitcher and a weak-throwing catcher, the odds are often longer than the real chance of a steal. That gap is the whole edge. If only one of the three is there, it's usually a pass.
