Onboarding process on BYB (BuildYourBudget)
- Choosing your currency
A simple screen asking for your primary currency. The app supports multi-currencies. You can view your cash accounts in any currency of your choosing. The system fetches exchange rates every 24 hours and converts everything on-the-fly to your chosen Display Currency for your Total Net Worth dashboard.
- Setting up Cash Accounts
A dashboard to add your financial accounts. You can add manual "unlinked" accounts for cash or loans.
Debt Tracking: If you add a Loan account here, the system calculates daily accrued interest based on your annual rate. When you log a payment, it intelligently splits it between Principal and Interest so your payoff date is accurate.
- Categories and budget assignments
Setting up your spending categories (Groceries, Rent, Fun). This sets up the Zero-Based Budgeting engine.
The assigned amount will be the amount that will be deducted when you assign expense transactions to it's respective category. Spending the enveloped money that you've put aside for that specific category.
The "Rollover" System: Unlike most apps that reset every month, BYB runs a "Snowball" calculation. If you assign $500 to Groceries but only spend $450, the remaining $50 automatically rolls over to next month.
- Setting up goals
Setting targets like "New Car" or "Emergency Fund." You don't just set a number. You actually Link a category (point 3) to a Goal.
When you budget money into that category, the system marks it as "saved" toward that specific goal.
Once you hit the target amount, you can "Unlock" the goal, which releases the category back into your general expense pool.
