Should I Take the SAT?

I just moved to a new country, and my school counselor strongly advised me to take the SAT on August 24. However, this is my first time hearing about the test (literally), and my prep has been inconsistent. The test costs $68, which makes me feel uneasy. Should I take it now or wait until October?
