I’m realizing a home cinema is way more than just buying a good projector

I used to think creating a cinema-at-home setup was pretty straightforward. Get a good projector, put up a decent screen, connect everything and you’re basically done. After actually trying to put one together, I’ve realized there are so many little things that can completely change how the final picture looks.

I’m currently working with a fairly normal living room rather than a dedicated theater, so I’m trying to figure out how much I can realistically improve the experience without turning the entire room into a renovation project. Most of my watching happens at night, especially movies, and I’d really like that proper big-screen feeling without having to spend an absurd amount of money.

What surprised me most is how often people talk about the projector specifications but barely mention the room itself. Things like where the projector sits, how much light comes into the room, what kind of screen you use and even how far you sit from it seem to matter much more than I expected.

I’m currently trying to decide where I should put my money first. Should I prioritize a better projector, a better screen, room-darkening, or something else entirely? I’d rather spend the money on one or two things that actually make a noticeable difference instead of slowly buying upgrades that don't really change the experience.

For those who have already built a home cinema setup, what was the one change that made you sit down and immediately think, Okay, this was actually worth it?
