Previous failed DV/SC clearance and now starting a new Civil Service role — what happens when I need CTC/SC

Hi all, looking for some advice/reassurance from anyone familiar with Civil Service vetting.

Last year I applied for a Civil Service role which required both SC and DV clearance. The SC part went through relatively quickly and I passed it. The DV process then took around six months.

Unfortunately, during the period between the SC and DV checks, I was arrested. This obviously became relevant to the DV process, and ultimately I wasn’t granted DV clearance. As a result, the department discontinued my application and I didn’t get the role.

Fast-forward to now and I’m in a completely different Civil Service position. This role didn’t require enhanced national security vetting when I joined — it only required the basic BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) checks. Those went through surprisingly quickly, and I’ve now started the job.

There is one additional complication which is making me particularly anxious. After starting my current role, I was offered another Civil Service position elsewhere. That role required CTC clearance, and my application was subsequently rejected because I failed the CTC vetting due to a pending prosecution. So I now know that the pending prosecution was identified through the police information available during the CTC process, rather than this simply being an old DV issue that I’m speculating might come up.

The current role involves things such as attending Parliament, and I understand that at some point I’ll potentially need additional clearance (CTC/SC depending on the specific duties and access) in order to obtain the relevant passes and/or access certain information.
This is where I’m getting anxious.

I’m worried that when I eventually have to go through CTC or SC again, the previous DV refusal/failure — and now the fact that I have already failed CTC because of the pending prosecution — will come up. More importantly, I’m worried that if I don’t pass the future clearance, my current employer will find out about it and I could potentially lose the job I’ve already started.

I appreciate that vetting is assessed on the circumstances at the time and that failing/refusing one level of clearance doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll automatically fail another. However, given that I’ve now had a CTC application specifically refused because of the pending prosecution, I’m struggling to understand what that means for my current role and any future requirement for CTC/SC.
Has anyone been in a similar situation — e.g. previously failed/refused DV, subsequently failed CTC because of an ongoing/pending prosecution, but then remained in or joined the Civil Service in a role requiring only BPSS and later had to obtain CTC/SC?

What would you do in my position? Would you proactively speak to HR/security vetting now, or just wait until the role actually requires the higher level of clearance?

I’m not trying to hide anything — I’m just anxious about whether my previous vetting history and the recent CTC refusal could come back to affect a job I’ve already started, particularly if I’m eventually required to obtain CTC or SC for the current role.

Any advice from people with actual Civil Service vetting experience would be really appreciated.
