Need help choosing a console

Throwaway because my fiancee is also a redditor.

I've been a PC gamer most of my life, and the last console I owned was one of these.

...however, my fiancee, who isn't a gamer, and who I have terrible trouble finding good gifts for, "casually" mentioned that it might be nice to have a console we could hook up to the TV in the living room and play games together.

So, here I am. I know little about current consoles, and don't even know the right questions to ask. Any help to point me in the right direction is appreciated.
