Qualcomm has finally announced its new flagship smartphone chips, and this time there are two of them: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

Both chips use Qualcomm's new Oryon CPU and can reach up to 5GHz on their Prime cores. Qualcomm is also moving to a 2nm process for this generation.

The bigger changes are across the GPU and AI side.

The new Adreno GPU gets a major redesign, with Qualcomm claiming up to 35% better GPU performance and 40% better power efficiency on the 8 Elite Gen 6 compared with the previous generation. The Extreme version goes further with dedicated Adreno Matrix Cores and Neural Fusion for AI-assisted upscaling and frame generation in games.

The Extreme Gen 6 also gets a larger shared memory pool and stronger NPU hardware. Qualcomm says it can handle 30B+ parameter Mixture-of-Experts models on-device, which shows how much the company is focusing on local AI this generation.

There are also camera improvements. Qualcomm's new Spectra ISP adds Intelligent Pixel Control, while the Extreme model supports up to 8K60 video and 4K240 slow-motion capture.

So, instead of just chasing higher CPU benchmark numbers, Qualcomm seems to be pushing this generation toward a mix of performance, gaming, on-device AI, camera processing and efficiency.

The interesting part now is how these chips perform in actual phones. Motorola has already announced the Signature 27 with the Extreme Gen 6, and more flagship phones should follow soon.

What do you think? Is Qualcomm's focus on on-device AI and AI-powered gaming actually useful, or are these chips mainly going to mean more expensive flagship phones?
