Hawkish Fed minutes flip the tape defensive. Health care and metals lead. | DarkFlow EOD recap

Daily Signal

The July 28-29 FOMC meeting minutes printed hawkish at 2:00 PM ET and the afternoon spent the rest of the session in a defensive posture. Money rotated out of chips and into health care and precious metals, and our signal book was already positioned for exactly that. Here is the close.

Tape close

  • S&P 500 roughly flat, small green
  • Nasdaq 100 slightly red, chips the drag
  • Russell 2000 modestly green
  • VIX in the high 14s, calm

Sectors told the story: health care was the number-one group, consumer and staples firm, while technology, industrials and financials lagged. Gold and silver both ran hard on the day.

What these numbers signal

A hawkish minutes read (officials flagging the risk of a hike if inflation does not cool) is a classic defensive trigger. You saw it in the rotation: buyers paid up for health care and for the debasement hedges (gold, silver, miners), while the crowded chip and crypto names ran on the surface but were being sold into underneath. When the loudest movers are being distributed and the quiet defensive group is being accumulated, the accumulation is the signal.

What ran on the live signal book

Nothing settled today - no closes and no stops - so the story is the open book, and the marks are firmly on the defensive rotation:

  • $LLY $1255C (8/28) - today's fresh entry, green from the open (up ~+33%). Clean call-side buying, no dealer wall against it, and health care leading. This is the cleanest fresh setup on the board and it is in the group actually being accumulated.
  • $AMGN $395C (9/18) - up over +110%, deep in the money, riding the same health care bid.
  • $NOW $105C (8/21) - up over +200% into a strong close, a software runner into Friday expiry.
  • $GOOGL $330C (8/21) - green and in the money (peaked far higher, over +400%, earlier in its life).
  • $SLV $57.5C (9/18) - up ~+28% as metals ripped; it peaked near +190% earlier and is still working.
  • $SOXX puts (9/11) - up ~+14%. The aligned hedge: chips were the weak side all day, so the downside expression pays while the long book runs.

What stopped today

Nothing. No new closes and no stops on the session. A handful of older positions sit past their published invalidation and ride to expiry per the rule.

What's coming this week

  • NVDA earnings on 8/26 - the marquee event; any near-dated chip call has to respect that print.
  • Next Fed decision 9/16, four weeks out; the market is split roughly hold vs cut, and the hawkish minutes just nudged that debate.
  • Watch for any Fed speaker walking back the hawkish tone - that would re-open the cut path and flip the defensive read.

Postclose flow worth tracking

  • Health care breadth beyond the leaders - fresh names buyers were paying up for ($DXCM, $JNJ, $PFE) that need one more day to confirm.
  • Precious metals ($GLD, $GDX, $SLV) - the strongest one-sided buying on the board, though the group is now crowded, so we ride the existing position rather than chase.
  • $UTHR - a clean, quiet early setup building on a coil with no dealer wall against it; a watch-and-trigger name, not a chase.

How we track

Every signal is posted with full transparency - entry, peak, current, and losses, all on a free public dashboard. Free members see the picks on delay and every percentage; members get them live with the strikes. Every position follows one published exit rule - it rides to expiry, hits the -50% stop, or locks its profit floor. Nothing else.
