Rail Travel Advice

I know some train companies offer 'Priority Cards' to disabled folk to show to people who are sitting in 'priority seats' or when there are no seats available and a disabled person is standing. Has anyone any experience of how or if these work in practice?
Now we've got a disabled rail card we are using the train quite a lot, bit finding an issue getting a seat on busy (commuter-type) routes.
