Microsoft is Quietly Replacing Some Azure Certifications with AI Certifications (2026 Certification Roadmap)
Last week, we provided a comprehensive overview of the four AI-related certifications launched by Microsoft, helping everyone understand that Microsoft is currently focusing heavily on AI development. Recently, we've noticed some information about adjustments to Microsoft's certification system. If this information is accurate, Microsoft may be undergoing the largest certification system transformation in recent years. The core trend is very clear:
AI is becoming the center of the Azure certification system.
Starting in 2026, a batch of new AI-related certifications will enter the Beta phase, while some classic Azure certifications will gradually retire.
New AI Certifications Microsoft Will Launch in 2026
Currently, Microsoft plans to introduce 9 new certification exams, expected to enter Beta testing between March and August 2026. These certifications can be roughly divided into three directions.
1. AI / Data / Cloud Certifications - Microsoft's New Core AI Certification System
AI-300 — Machine Learning Operations Engineer
Focuses on Machine Learning Operations (MLOps). Main content may include:
- Azure Machine Learning
- Model deployment
- MLOps automation processes
- Model monitoring and management
This certification is primarily aimed at AI platform engineers.
DP-750 — Azure Databricks Data Engineer
Microsoft's collaboration with Databricks continues to strengthen. This certification may cover:
- Apache Spark
- MLflow
- Data processing and AI data pipelines
- Feature engineering
Primarily aimed at AI data engineers.
DP-800 — SQL AI Developer
This is a relatively unique new certification. It may combine:
- SQL development
- AI data analysis
- AI-driven data applications
This indicates that Microsoft is attempting to introduce AI capabilities into traditional database development roles.
AI-901 — Azure AI Fundamentals
This certification will likely replace the current AI-900. Main content may include:
- Generative AI fundamentals
- Azure AI services
- AI governance and Responsible AI
It will become the entry-level AI certification.
AI-103 — Azure AI App and Agent Developer
This is one of the most noteworthy new certifications. Key areas include:
- AI application development
- AI Agent development
- Copilot integration
Related technologies may include:
- Azure OpenAI
- Semantic Kernel
- Copilot Studio
- Multi-Agent systems
This certification indicates that AI Agents are likely to become a new software development paradigm.
AI-200 — Azure AI Cloud Developer
This certification is positioned for AI cloud developers. It may involve:
- AI application deployment
- LLM integration
- AI infrastructure
2. Security + AI Certifications - AI Development is Also Transforming the Security Field
SC-730 — Cybersecurity Business Professional
This certification leans more towards:
- Security strategy
- Risk management
- Security governance
Likely aimed at security managers and business decision-makers.
SC-500 — Cloud and AI Security Engineer
AI security is becoming a new hot field. Content may include:
- AI model security
- AI governance
- Responsible AI
- Cloud security architecture
This certification will likely replace AZ-500.
3. Windows / Hybrid Certifications - Even Traditional IT Certifications are Being Updated
AZ-802 — Windows Server Hybrid Administrator
Key areas include:
- Windows + Azure hybrid environments
- Enterprise server management
- Hybrid cloud architecture
Azure Certifications Retiring in 2026
Meanwhile, some classic Azure certifications are planned to retire in 2026:
| Certification | Retirement Date | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| DP-100 Azure Data Scientist Associate | 2026-06-01 | AI-300 |
| AI-900 Azure AI Fundamentals | 2026-06-30 | AI-901 |
| AI-102 Azure AI Engineer Associate | 2026-06-30 | AI-103 |
| AZ-204 Azure Developer Associate | 2026-07-31 | AI-200 |
| AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer | 2026-08-31 | SC-500 |
| AZ-800 / AZ-801 Windows Hybrid Admin | 2026-09 | AZ-802 |
In other words: many classic Azure certifications are being replaced by AI versions. And we can see that Microsoft's larger trend is: Azure certifications are comprehensively becoming AI-focused.
If we compare the old and new certification structures, a very obvious change emerges.
The past certification system mainly consisted of:
- Developer
- Security
- Data
- Cloud
The new certification system is becoming:
- AI
- AI Security
- AI Data
- AI Developer
- AI Operations
In other words: AI is no longer just a skill direction, but the core of the entire certification system.
Another Important Signal: AI Agent Development
The new AI-103 certification explicitly mentions AI Agent development. This is highly consistent with Microsoft's current strategic priorities, including:
- Copilot
- AI Agents
- Enterprise AI applications
Related technologies include:
- Semantic Kernel
- Azure OpenAI
- Copilot Studio
- Agent workflow
If this trend continues, future software development may become a combination of: AI Agent + application development.
With Microsoft's launch of AI certifications in 2026, we may be witnessing an important transformation:
Cloud Certifications → AI Certifications
This also raises a question: Will the most important technical certification in the future become:
AI Engineer
Rather than:
Cloud Architect?
In your view:
Is this a natural evolution of the technical certification system, or will there be an AI certification bubble similar to the cloud certification bubble we saw years ago?
