How to talk about new habits and make weekend running plans in Spanish: 8 café phrases (A1–A2)

Spanish for English speakers

To talk about your new habit:

  • Quería cambiar algo en mi vida. — I wanted to change something in my life.
  • Pasaba demasiado tiempo con el móvil. ¡Todas las tardes! — I spent too much time on my phone. Every evening!
  • ¡Ja! No, no voy a ganar. Solo quiero terminarla. — Ha! No, I won't win. I just want to finish.
  • ¡Tranquila! Siempre empezamos despacio. Solo diez minutos. — No worries! We always begin slowly. Just ten minutes.

What your friend says back (and how to make weekend plans):

  • ¿Desde cuándo? ¡Si antes nunca corrías! — Since when? You never ran before!
  • ¿Diez minutos? Vale... ¡me apunto! — Ten minutes? OK... count me in!
  • ¿A las ocho? ¿Podemos cambiarlo a las nueve? — At eight? Can we change it to nine?
  • Y después pasamos una hora en la cafetería. ¡Pago yo! — And after that, we'll spend an hour at the café. I'll pay!

Note: ¡Tranquila! is feminine; if you are talking to a man, you say ¡Tranquilo! And ¡me apunto! comes from the reflexive verb apuntarse, meaning "count me in!" or "I'm in!".
