Etymology of Latin ago and gero
Hello! I read something interesting and wanted to share it with you all.
For Latin ago, Greek ἄγω, and Sanskrit ájati, all meaning „to drive“, one could reconstruct a common ancestor with the root *áǵ-.
If one were to make this a CVC root, this would result in *h₂éǵ-.
By comparing Latin gero „to carry, perform“ and its participle gestus „carried, performed“, one can deduce that the root of this verb is ges-. Due to the semantic similarities with ago, one can associate these two roots with one another. The expected outcome of the zero grade with a suffix, *h₂ǵ-es-, would be ges- in Latin.
It is therefore plausible that ago and gero can share an etymology.
