TIL a small Indian kingdom once defeated the Mongols, one of the most feared armies in history.
In 1305, the Mongol Empire launched another invasion into India, continuing a series of attacks that had terrorized much of Asia and Europe.
Near present-day Delhi, the invading Mongol force was defeated by the army of the Delhi Sultanate under Alauddin Khalji. Thousands of Mongol soldiers were captured, and the invasion was crushed so decisively that large-scale Mongol attempts to conquer India effectively came to an end.
At a time when the Mongols had conquered territories stretching from China to Eastern Europe, successfully stopping them was a remarkable achievement.
History often remembers where the Mongols won, but far fewer people know about the kingdoms that managed to stop them.
