How many hours did you study for the SIE? Here's what the data says.

I see this question come up constantly, so I wanted to share what we've found works for most candidates.

The short version:

  • Finance or econ background: 20 to 40 hours is usually enough. You already know the vocabulary and products. It's more about refreshing rules and learning the FINRA-specific stuff.
  • Brand new to securities: plan for 60 to 80 hours. There's a real learning curve with the terminology, and it's better to build that foundation properly than rush through it.
  • Most people: 40 to 60 hours over 4 to 6 weeks. That works out to about 10 to 15 hours a week.

The biggest variable isn't how many hours you study. It's how consistently you study. Two 30 to 60 minute sessions a day will outperform one long weekend session every time. Spaced repetition (spreading practice out over days and weeks) beats cramming because your brain needs time between sessions to consolidate what you learned.

The second variable is what you actually do during study time. Reading the material is step one. But the candidates who pass most reliably are the ones drilling hundreds of practice questions and going back to review the ones they got wrong. Passive reading alone won't get you there.

If anyone wants a more detailed week-by-week plan, Acadio put together a full breakdown:
