The [opening credit sequence](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaGy7rwjsFE&t=30s) of *Valerian* really is a vexillological trove, isn’t it? After we see alternate versions of the [US flag](https://www.reddit.com/r/FlagsOfFiction/comments/1tm7kda/flag_patch_seen_on_american_astronaut_aboard_the/) and the [Chinese flag](https://www.reddit.com/r/FlagsOfFiction/comments/1tm7mli/flag_patch_seen_on_chinese_taikonaut_aboard_the/), we get this lovely addition, what appears to be a 22nd Century Ukrainian national flag.
Unlike the previous two which only appeared as spacesuit patches, this Ukrainian flag appears both on the cosmonaut’s uniform, but also behind her crew as an actual flag. As she passes the [flags of the United Human Federation](https://www.reddit.com/r/FlagsOfFiction/comments/1tm5njr/flag_of_the_united_human_federation_valerian_and/) to deliver the ceremonial handshake aboard *Alpha*, we get a good view of her shoulder patch.

The flag of Ukraine, like its current [real-world version](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Ukraine), is a horizontal bicolor of blue and yellow. Although, the blue has taken on a more greenish hue and the yellow is more canary (perhaps the composition of Earth’s atmosphere has changed enough by the 2100s to merit a color shift of the sky and fields represented on the flag?). In the center we see the [Tryzub](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Ukraine) surrounded by a counterchanged 14-pointed sun.

It reminds me a little bit of the symbol of [RUNVira](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Ukrainian_National_Faith), the Native Ukrainian National Faith which also shows the trident in a sun shape. It’s also somewhat similar to [this Ukrainian Air Force flag](https://flagsbythedozen.com/products/ukraine-air-force-military-official-flag-100d-rough-tex-%C2%AE-ukrainian-armed-forces-3x5?srsltid=AfmBOoqjvzTFhQIJgaforRufludItETKyYthDYORdxVh0Z4R4kdBJrM4), which seems like a natural precursor to spacefaring missions.

The appearance of Ukrainian representatives in this film made [some buzz at the time](https://globalvoices.org/2017/11/10/amid-the-vast-universe-of-the-valerian-movie-ukraine-gets-a-special-shout-out/) with plenty of people instantly recognizing this flag as Ukrainian.
