[Guide] CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006 vs. XK0-005: Is the Upgrade Worth It? (Salary Data + "Breaking Into" DevOps Breakdown)
Hey everyone,
With the recent release of the CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006 and the upcoming retirement of XK0-005 (Jan 13, 2026), I’ve seen a ton of confusion in other subs. Is the new exam harder? Does it actually help with salary negotiation? Should you panic-study for the 005 or wait for the 006?
I spent the last 48 hours scanning top posts in r/CompTIA and r/ITCareerQuestions to give you the no-fluff breakdown.
If you are trying to figure out if this cert is worth it, here is everything you need to know.
The "Hard" Truth: What Changed?
The XK0-005 was already considered one of the harder CompTIA non-advanced exams because of the fill-in-the-blank questions and the need to memorize specific command flags.
XK0-006 doubles down on modern tech. They realized that "Just knowing Bash" isn't enough for 2025.
- Old (XK0-005): Heavy on traditional SysAdmin (Storage, User Management, Networking).
- New (XK0-006): Shifts focus to Automation, Orchestration, and Cloud.
- Python Basics: You now need to read/understand Python scripts (not just Bash).
- Containerization: Docker/Kubernetes concepts are heavily emphasized.
- AI & Prompt Engineering: Yes, they actually added AI best practices to the objectives.
Salary & ROI: Is it Worth It?
Let's talk numbers. I scanned recent "Hired" threads to see what people are actually making.
- Entry-Level (SysAdmin): $50k - $65k
- Mid-Level (Linux Engineer): $85k - $110k
- Senior (DevOps/Cloud): $130k+
The Verdict: The XK0-006 is arguably more worth it for breaking into high-paying DevOps roles than the 005 was. The 005 was a great "Server Admin" cert, but the 006 aligns much closer with what cloud recruiters are looking for (Kubernetes + Python).
The Decision Matrix: Which one should you take?
Do not just blindly pick the new one.
Take the XK0-005 (Before Jan 13, 2026) if:
- You want to get certified FAST. The study materials (Dion, Messer, Sybex) are mature and everywhere.
- You are looking for a traditional On-Prem SysAdmin role.
- You hate Python and just want to stick to Bash scripting.
- You want to avoid being a "guinea pig" for new exam questions.
Take the XK0-006 if:
- You are trying to break into DevOps or Cloud Engineering.
- You want a cert that is ISO-accredited (XK0-006 has the ANAB stamp).
- You are comfortable waiting a few months for better study guides to come out.
- You want to future-proof your resume for the next 3 years.

We are compiling practice questions for both versions over at r/FreeExamPrep. Whether you are rushing the 005 finish line or starting the 006 journey, we’ve got you covered.
TL;DR: XK0-005 is safer and has more study guides. XK0-006 is harder but pays better long-term because it includes Cloud/Python.
Drop a comment: Are you rushing the 005 or waiting for 006 study guides?
