Is Traditional SEO Audit Not Enough? Try This GEO Audit Skill
Recently, I have been researching a project called SEO GEO Audit. After running it on several sites, I found that it solves a long-standing problem in SEO: the audit is completed, the problems clearly exist, but the report is complex and difficult to understand, priorities are unclear, and ultimately, few people actually implement the improvements.
Traditional SEO audits often focus only on the technical aspects and content of the website itself. However, in the era of AI search, when search engines and LLMs (such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview) cite content, they also look at whether your website is AI-referenceable, whether the brand entity is clear, and whether external signals are complete.
What makes this Skill special is that it integrates SEO + GEO (AI Visibility, Brand Trust, External Entities) into a unified framework, allowing the same data to output reports in three different formats for bosses, execution teams, and specialists.
In this article, I want to share:
- The design logic of this Skill.
- The dimensions audited.
- How to use it.
- The essential differences compared to traditional SEO audit tools.
- How to directly transform audit results into actionable content and outreach workflows.
What This Skill Audits: A Five-Layer Structure
The entire audit framework is divided into five layers, each with clear inspection targets.
Layer 1: Technical SEO
This is the foundation of all audits, but the technical layer of this Skill goes beyond entry-level checks like sitemaps or robots.txt. It covers:
- Crawl & Indexing: Is the internal link structure healthy? Are there misuses of
noindex? Can crawlers smoothly discover and crawl core pages? - Rendering & Performance: Is the page DOM size reasonable? How heavy is the inline burden of JavaScript and CSS? What is the quality of the first-screen load?
- URL Normalization: Are redirection chains clean? Are canonical tags used correctly? Is the URL structure consistent?
- Security Foundations: Is the HTTPS configuration complete? Are key security response headers missing—such as CSP, HSTS, and X-Frame-Options? Many sites assume they are secure when these headers are actually empty.
- Schema & Metadata: Is the coverage of structured data types reasonable? Are there syntax errors or missing fields in JSON-LD?
- Mobile Accessibility: Mobile rendering quality, font size compliance, and whether clickable areas meet standards.
Output: A quantifiable technical score, labeling whether each problem actually affects ranking efficiency, conversion efficiency, or security trust. It doesn't just list problems; it clarifies their business implications.
Layer 2: On-page SEO
This layer looks at the "search usability" of the content—whether search engines can understand what you are saying and whether the content truly matches the user's search intent.
Specifically, it checks:
- Titles & Meta Descriptions: Missing, duplicate, truncated, or keyword-stuffed entries.
- Heading Structure: Multiple H1s, skipping heading levels, and whether key information is at the front.
- Keyword & Intent Alignment: Whether the page content truly serves the target user's query scenario, rather than just keyword frequency.
- Content Depth & Structure: Information coverage, clarity of paragraph organization, and whether both users and crawlers can quickly locate key information.
- Internal Link Structure: Effective interlinking between core pages and the presence of orphan pages.
- Images & Media: Alt text coverage, image formats, and lazy loading configurations.
Core principle: Not "are keywords present," but "is intent correctly served."
Layer 3: GEO & AI Visibility
This is where this Skill differs most from traditional SEO audit tools. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) addresses whether your website can be understood, extracted, and cited by AI systems.
Inspection items include:
- Answer-First Format: Does the page provide a clear conclusion at the beginning? Is the content structure conducive to AI extracting key paragraphs?
- Semantic Extractability: Does the content have a clear semantic structure for AI systems to understand which paragraph relates to which question?
- AI Crawler Signals: Does
robots.txtexplicitly allow access for AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot? - llms.txt Configuration: An emerging standard, similar to
robots.txtfor AI, telling LLMs how to understand the site and which content is worth prioritizing. - AI-Friendly Schema: Does structured data help AI correctly identify brand entities, product types, and author identities?
Additional dimension: Platform Adaptation Variance Analysis ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot have different citation preferences and algorithmic logics. This Skill evaluates where you have advantages and blind spots across different platforms.
Layer 4: Entity, Trust & Authority
This layer checks whether the brand entity is clear, on-site trust signals are complete, and authority is supported.
- Author & Editorial Transparency: Is the content attributed to an author? Can the author's identity be verified? Are there author pages or bios?
- Organizational Identity Consistency: Are company name, contact information, and brand description consistent?
- Basic Page Integrity: Do About, Contact, Privacy Policy, and Terms pages exist and have substantial content?
- Entity Disambiguation: Does the website clearly express what the brand is, what it does, and whom it serves? Includes
sameAsSchema and unified brand naming. - Third-Party Credibility Indicators: External media mentions, customer cases, industry awards, and compliance certifications.
Many SaaS websites fail here: great products but weak entity signals, reducing AI referability.
Layer 5: Off-site Mentions & Platform Adaptation
This is a blind spot that traditional SEO audits fail to cover.
- Social & Community Platforms: LinkedIn, Reddit discussions, YouTube channels.
- Authoritative Databases & Industry Media: Wikipedia/Wikidata entries, GitHub, Crunchbase, Product Hunt, industry press, podcasts.
- Actual Performance on AI Platforms: Brand visibility on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot.
Value: Helps locate specific gaps in external mentions and entity signals, highlighting where the brand is invisible to AI.
Technical Execution: Underlying CLI Configuration
This Skill uses the seomator audit command-line tool:
seomator audit https://your-site.com --crawl -m 20 --format llm --no-cwv
--crawl: Multi-page crawling starting from the homepage.-m 20: Maximum pages to capture, covering core templates.--format llm: AI-friendly output, ready for agent workflows.--no-cwv: Skips Core Web Vitals for faster initial audits.
Other parameters:
-c, --categories: Run only specific categories.--refresh: Ignore cache and re-crawl.--resume: Resume interrupted tasks.-o: Output to a specific file.--config / seomator.toml: Use a preset config file.
Reporting Strategy: Multi-Mode Output
Three Output Modes
-
Boss Mode – High-level decision-making:
- One-sentence conclusion → Overall judgment → Key issues → Priority suggestions (P0/P1/P2)
Example:
Conclusion: Basic SEO is strong, but homepage performance, security headers, and AI-referenceable signals need attention. Overall Judgment: - Technical Health: Medium-High - Content & Brand Visibility: Medium - AI / GEO Readiness: Medium Key Issues: - Homepage too heavy: affects speed - Missing security headers - AI crawlers not explicitly allowed - Weak brand entity signals P0 Immediate: Compress homepage, complete headers P1 This Month: Allow AI crawlers, add llms.txt -
Operator Mode – For SEO leads and growth teams:
- Categorizes issues into Observed / Assessment / Not Verified, avoiding confusion between confirmed and inferred problems.
-
Specialist Mode – Full diagnostic report for technical teams or clients, including scoring logic, inspection standards, hypotheses, and data limitations.
P0 / P1 / P2 Priority Framework
- P0: Issues affecting crawling, indexing, security, or core conversion. Immediate business impact.
- P1: Content quality, metadata, AI visibility. Gains but not emergency.
- P2: Long-term structural, entity, and competitive positioning. Important but not urgent.
Produces a 30/60/90-day roadmap for immediate execution by teams.
Essential Differences from Traditional Audit Tools
