Coming off Wegovy — how to transition to weight maintenance?
I started Wegovy in May 2024 and I’m now 50 lbs down and hit my goal weight. I never went above the 1.0 mg dose and stayed on it for 8 months, then went back down to 0.5 mg for the last 3 months.
I just moved to Asia about 3 weeks ago and before my move from the US, I refilled my prescription and brought 4 pens with me. I have one pen left.
My doctor told me I didn’t need to titrate all the way down to 0.25mg because I’d already been stable on 0.5 mg, and my weight has stayed within a 3 lb fluctuation for the last 3 months. What I’m worried about is that I feel like the only reason I’ve maintained is because I was still on 0.5 mg.
Honestly I let the medication do the heavy lifting and didn’t make major lifestyle changes but now that I’m in Asia, living in a walkable city with easy access to healthier food and away from the constant stress in the U.S., I’m praying it’ll be effortless to keep this progress…
however I am a little scared that once I’m off completely, my appetite will come back and I’ll gain it back. I could technically continue this medication here if I really wanted to, but it’s not covered by insurance since obesity is not considered a medical condition here. I would have to pay out of pocket and it’s $400 PER PEN — that’s why I rather get off!
For those who have transitioned off the medication, aside from tracking calories and exercising, was there any thing else that helped keep your appetite/cravings in control and support blood sugar?
