The Rag Doll duo of Ted and Toby are pretty simple on a surface level. Ted is the good guy because he was loved, Toby is the bad guy because he was abandoned, easy to grasp. But then you start digging deeper and suddenly there's more questions than answers.

So the first red flag: Toby is supposed to be the troublemaker because he was abandoned by his owner. But turns out that owner is Sophia, who didn't abandon him but in fact had him taken away and is now on a quest to get him back. Strange, but alright... you could kinda handwave that as "well maybe the new owner didn't treat him well".

Then Sorceress Sophia gets added and her bio says that oh, Ted and Toby are both her dolls. And apparently she lost Ted too? But because Ted remembers being loved by his owner and is the good guy, then that must mean there were two separate instances where she lost each of her dolls. I mean I guess she's a kid so that's not too hard to believe.

And then The Keronic Strikes Back update brings a proper story to the main campaign, where Sophia and Isis both reach the Forgotten Toy Town, and it turns out it's not just Ted and Toby, but actually a whole bunch of dolls belong to both of them. So then did Isis also lose a bunch of her dolls?

Let's also not forget that Ted and Toby are characters in an in-universe kids show called "The Adventures of Ted and Toby". Did that establish Ted and Toby as adversaries or did that just kind of happen on its own with the dolls? Who knows?

Then we get to EB, which re-establishes Ted and Toby's rivalry because Ted was loved and Toby was abandoned, except remember that in EB, Ted and Toby appear on the Taurus planet, meaning this is a separate pair of Ted and Toby dolls who are going through the exact same situation as the duo back on Armon, except this time it's very clearly said that the two were separated at the factory and belonged to very distinct different owners.

But now the EB version of Ted isn't with his owner, he's just hanging out with the rest of the crew on Taurus? This is on top of HH1's character descriptions implying Ted and Toby are "spirits" of dolls. So what, is there some specified time where a doll is supposed to leave its owner? How the heck does that work??

Idunno man. Like... if you write it all down, you can come up with a coherent narrative, but it doesn't quite feel like this was all planned from the start lol

To this day Ted and Toby's lore still breaks my brain
