How do you make the next season of a reality show "better"?
First I'll say that I am enjoying His Man 3 overall. I'm even enjoying the drama, or at least I'm intrigued. Drama in itself isn't bad. I'm just not a fan of how the drama feels a bit manufactured. For me, the show is giving off the vibes of "We're trying to top season 2".
Season 2 was kind of a miracle for them because of, let's be honest, Junseong and Seongho. A really sweet love story between two likable guys that are still together to this day. What a success story!! How do we top that...?
If this is truly a reality show and isn't entirely scripted, then you obviously can't force a love story to happen. This ain't a BL. You're putting 8 REAL people into a house and seeing what happens. The best you can do is organize interesting activities and edit the show in a way that tells an interesting narrative, but it's still up to whatever the contestants do. It's totally possible to have a season where just no one likes each other. So what can you do?
That's where I think the drama comes in. They can't guarantee a great love story, but they can plant seeds of drama to spice things up. Like giving people secret missions that require withholding truth and allowing two people with a very rocky past on the show together. Like, they definitely knew what they were doing there. You put a snake and a mongoose together, what do you think is gonna happen? And they're definitely getting the intense drama they want, I'm just not sure if the response is what they want.
I've seen some people say they're living for the drama while others find it very off putting. Reception is very mixed and I personally haven't seen anyone say they like it more than season 2. But at the same time, I'm not sure what else they could've done. They could always be more hands off with it, but then we might get something like season 1. I personally really liked season 1 because it was very chill and relatively drama free (at least on camera), but I also know people that thought it was boring.
It also doesn't help that we've also got The Boyfriend now. I'm not saying The Boyfriend is better (it has it's own flaws in my opinion), but when you have two East Asian gay dating shows, the first of their kind, airing at the same time, people are gonna compare.
