Masters in AI/CS from Japan
Hi everyone, I’m an Indian working professional currently employed as an AI Engineer, and I’m considering whether doing a Master’s in AI / Computer Science from Japan makes sense for my career. I’d really appreciate advice from Indians already studying or working in Japan.
My profile: 10th – 95.6% 12th – 93% UG CGPA – 8.96 / 10 Degree – B.E. in Information Science and Engineering
Work experience: 11 months internship at a service-based company as an AIOps Intern Converted to full-time in the same company as Associate AI Engineer Around 5 months of full-time experience as of Jan 2026
Japanese level: 0 (No JLPT; assume complete beginner. Very basic exposure only.)
I’m confused mainly about 2026 vs 2027 intake.
Since I’m already working and my Japanese level is zero, I’m trying to decide between:
2026 intake: Apply immediately to English-taught AI/CS programs Minimal dependence on Japanese initially Lower opportunity cost Concern: limited Japanese may restrict internships and job options later
2027 intake: Work for one more year in India Improve technical depth and projects Learn Japanese up to JLPT N3 (maximum target) Apply with stronger work experience and some language buffer
I am not aiming for N2/N1 and I’m not assuming business-level Japanese during or after my Master’s.
Key questions I need clarity on:
-
Is a Master’s in AI/CS from Japan actually worth it for someone who is already working in AI? Does it add real career value compared to continuing work experience?
-
Funding and ROI: I will apply for MEXT, but it is highly competitive. If I don’t get MEXT or a major scholarship, I’ll have to self-fund through an education loan. In that case:
Is the ROI reasonable for AI/CS graduates in Japan?
Are entry-level AI/CS salaries sufficient to manage living costs and loan repayment?
- Language reality with N3 max:
Is N3 enough for daily life and part-time work?
How realistic is it to get AI/CS jobs with limited Japanese but strong technical skills?
- Job market and visa:
How difficult is the transition from student visa to engineer visa?
Are foreign graduates actually getting AI/ML roles, or do most end up in generic IT roles?
Does prior work experience in India significantly help in Japanese hiring?
- University and program selection:
How important is university ranking vs professor/lab reputation?
Are English-taught AI/CS programs viewed differently from Japanese-taught ones by employers?
Any universities or labs particularly good for AI/CS and international students?
Bluntly: if I don’t get MEXT, have to self-fund, and only reach N3-level Japanese, is Japan still a good long-term career move, or would continuing to work in India (or elsewhere) make more sense?
Looking for honest, ground-reality advice from people who’ve already gone through this decision.
