Phone screen vs video call: why phone interview AI is basically free mode with zero detection risk
So i had two interviews this week, one phone one video, and it kinda hit me how different the experience is when you use one of these phone interview ai tools.
The phone screen was tuesday. Recruiter from a mid size fintech company, standard behavioral stuff. I had InterviewMan running on my laptop sitting right next to me on the desk. Full screen window, big text, i was literally reading suggestions off the screen like a damn teleprompter lol. Nobody can see anything because its a phone call. No camera, no screenshare, nothing. I could've taped the answers to my wall and she wouldnt have known.
Then wednesday i had a video panel with three engineers. Same tool running but now i gotta think about the overlay position, keeping my eyes near the camera, making sure nothing flashes if they ask me to screenshare. Still worked, InterviewMan handles the stealth stuff at $12/mo which is why i use it, but my stress level was completely different. Like night and day.
And thats when it clicked for me. All the detection stuff that these companies are building -- eye tracking, screen recording analysis, browser extension scanning, whatever else -- literally none of that matters on a phone call. Theres no screen for them to record. Theres no camera catching your eyes moving. Theres no browser for some proctoring tool to scan. The entire detection surface just does not exist on a phone interview.
If your starting out with phone interview ai I would say do phone screens first before video rounds. Get used to how fast the suggestions come in, figure out your rhythm for reading and talking at the same time. The stakes are so much lower when nobody can see you that its basically a free practice run. Then video interviews feel way less sketchy because you already know the tool.
anyone else notice how much easier phone interviews are with these running? feels like nobody talks about it
