9 Days in Japan for Two - Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka (Romantic First Trip)
Thanks to u/swallalalisa16 for sharing her upcoming first Japan trip with her boyfriend! There's something clearly special planned in Arashiyama - her partner has a surprise waiting there. I rewrote her itinerary into a clean format and pulled in some useful feedback from the comments.
Profile
First-timers from outside Japan, traveling as a couple. They lean romantic and aesthetic over busy and touristy - think matcha cafes, kimono photoshoots, river dinners at sunset rather than theme parks. They've pre-booked the essentials (Shibuya Sky, TeamLab, Shinkansen) and are keeping Day 4 flexible.
The trip falls on their anniversary - Day 6 is their special day, and something memorable is happening in Arashiyama that afternoon.
Questions
- Does the Kyoto routing on Day 8 (South - West - North) make sense, or is it too much for one day?
- Is Sanrio Puroland worth it, or better to skip and keep Tokyo more relaxed?
- Is Umeda Sky Building worth booking, or replace with something else?
- Any must-add romantic or offbeat experiences they're missing?
Plan
Day 1 - Arrival, Shinjuku
- Arrive in Tokyo, check into Shinjuku hotel
- Evening: Omoide Yokocho, Kabukicho - easy wander, low-key dinner
Day 2 - Harajuku + Shibuya
- Meiji Shrine (morning, peaceful)
- Takeshita Street (can be touristy - keep it brief)
- Harajuku cafes for matcha desserts
- Shibuya Crossing, Hachiko Statue, shopping
- Shibuya Sky at sunset (pre-booked)
- Dinner: Ichiran Ramen - tip from commenters: find a 24h location and go at breakfast time, the Shibuya queue at dinner can stretch 1.5h
Day 3 - Tsukiji + Ginza + TeamLab
- Start at Tsukiji Outer Market first thing in the morning (stalls close by early afternoon - several commenters flagged this)
- Ginza cafes midday
- TeamLab Borderless at 20:30 (pre-booked)
Day 4 - Flexible
- Option A: Sanrio Puroland - if you're a genuine fan, go. Otherwise consider Sanrioworld Ginza as a lighter alternative
- Option B: Mount Fuji day trip - only if visibility is confirmed; if you do Fuji, skip Odaiba in the evening (too far)
- Evening (if not doing Fuji): Odaiba waterfront, Rainbow Bridge views, Tokyo Tower photo spot
Day 5 - Tokyo to Kyoto
- Easy morning, Shinkansen around 1 PM (pre-booked)
- Arrive Kyoto afternoon: Nishiki Market, Gion evening walk
- Chopsticks-making session in the evening (pre-booked)
Day 6 - Anniversary Day (East + West Kyoto)
- Morning: Kimono dress-up, photoshoot at Yasaka Shrine, Gion streets, Sannenzaka + Ninenzaka, Kiyomizu-dera
- Afternoon: Arashiyama - Bamboo Grove, and a surprise the partner has planned
- Dinner: Shoraian Restaurant with river views in Arashiyama
- Sunset at Togetsukyo Bridge
Day 7 - Osaka Day Trip
- Leave Kyoto in the morning
- Osaka: Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Namba - commenters noted you can easily fill a whole day here
- Optional: Umeda Sky Building (one commenter: no observation deck in Osaka is really worth it - consider Shinsekai instead)
- Return to Kyoto for the night
Day 8 - Kyoto Loop (South - West - North)
- 7:30 AM: Fushimi Inari (early - fewer crowds)
- Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (hidden gem); nearby Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is also worth it - less crowded, beautiful bamboo
- Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
- Evening: Gion or Nishiki for dinner, possibly Kichi Kichi Omurice if reservation allows
Note: A commenter flagged this day involves a lot of cross-city bus travel. Consider trimming if energy is low.
Day 9 - Departure
- Flight from KIX (Kansai International Airport - KIX is in Osaka, not Kyoto). Use the Haruka Express from Kyoto Station - it runs directly to the airport.
