Cant send/receive sms between phone and tablet

Hi everyone! I spent way too many hours yesterday trying to get my android 15 moto g power to talk to my lineageos 20 galaxy tabs s2. It took everything I had, plus the help of AI to get them to connect thru their respective vpns.

Pings can be passed. Files can be exchanged. Notifications can be viewed. When I get a text notification on the tablet, clicking on it takes me to the kde connect app, but there is no way to view or send from it.

The SMS feature was the one I actually started out to try to get., so it makes sense it's the one that doesn't want to work.

Do any of you have any thoughts or tricks I might try to make it work?
