UK: Majority of Disposable Vapers May Seek Illicit Products Post-Ban, Survey Warns
Majority of disposable vapers could turn to illicit vape products
A new consumer survey has revealed significant concerns that the upcoming ban on disposable vapes could drive users towards the illicit market. The research indicates that 61% of current disposable vape users would consider purchasing illegal vapes if they were readily available after the ban, which is set to take effect on June 1st.
Stockpiling and Return to Smoking Feared Amidst New Restrictions
The survey also found that 57% of disposable vapers are considering stockpiling devices before the ban, suggesting that demand will likely shift underground rather than disappear. Furthermore, rising vape prices due to potential taxation are another concern, with 30% of respondents stating they would return to smoking traditional cigarettes if costs increased significantly. An additional 44% believe higher prices would deter current smokers from switching to vaping as a less harmful alternative.
The survey highlighted examples from other countries with stricter vaping regulations to illustrate potential consequences. In Australia, heavy restrictions on nicotine vapes in 2021 reportedly led to a surge in illicit sales, with over one million non-compliant or counterfeit vape products seized in 2022-23. Similarly, Massachusetts in the USA saw an increase in seized untaxed vaping devices after introducing a "patchwork ban," with one retailer found holding illicit stock worth nearly $20,000 in excise duties.
Andrej Kuttruf, CEO of Evapo, commented, "These findings highlight a very real unintended consequence. Whilst the intent behind the disposable vape ban and tax increases are understandable, the reality is that a significant number of consumers are signalling they may turn to unregulated, potentially unsafe products or even return to smoking." He emphasized the importance of supporting responsible adult vaping and maintaining access to safer alternatives to continue reducing smoking rates in the UK.
