The signal I almost ignored: active ads
When I first started scoring leads by signals, I ranked them the obvious way. Slow website, weak Google Business Profile, missing meta tags. Broken stuff. My logic was simple: broken means they need help, and need means they buy.
I was wrong about the order.
The lead with a slow site and a thin profile often has no budget and no urgency. Nothing is on fire for them because nothing is running. You show up, point at problems they never noticed, and now you are the bad news guy asking for money.
The signal I kept underweighting was active ads. A business already running Google or Meta ads is telling you two things at once. They spend money on getting customers, and they have decided that channel matters enough to pay for it every day. That is a company already in buying mode. You are not creating the need, you are walking into one that is already funded.
So now when I sort a list, active ads sits near the top, not the bottom. If a place is paying for traffic and their landing page loads slow or their profile has three reviews, that gap costs them real money right now, and they can feel it. That is a very different conversation than cold-pitching someone who never spent a dollar on acquisition.
The trap is treating every signal as equal weight. A slow site on a business with no ads is a hobby problem. A slow site on a business burning ad spend is a leak. Same technical fact, completely different pitch, completely different reply rate.
This is also why I built the ad detection to sit next to PageSpeed and the profile audit in LeadCanvas instead of on its own tab. The signals only mean something in combination. Ads plus a weak page is a lead. Ads plus a clean page is someone who already has an agency. No ads plus a broken page is a maybe, later.
If you do prospecting, try re-sorting your existing list by one question before you write anything: who here is already spending money to get customers? Pitch those first. The broken-but-broke leads will still be there next month, and they will still say no.
Curious if anyone weights signals differently. I keep going back and forth on how much a bad profile alone should count, and I do not think I have it fully right yet.
