11 The fine structure constant, and the horizon below

Every number so far has been large-scale: Λ, H₀, CMB multipoles, redshifts. This post goes small. The fine structure constant α ≈ 1/137 governs every photon that has ever been emitted or absorbed. No framework in standard physics predicts its value.

Until now. At 0.44%.

The formula

α = C(13/60) × Ω_Λ^(-1/60) = 0.00733

CODATA: 0.0072974. Agreement: 0.44%. Zero free parameters.

Every component traces to existing structure:

ComponentValueSource
C(13/60) = 2sin²(13π/60)0.7921Phase operator at matter well
Ω_Λ = 3/(Λ · ℓ_P²)~10¹²²Planck 2018
Ω_Λ^(-1/60)9.253 × 10⁻³One grid step of hierarchy

Why these inputs

The well: 13/120 is where matter sits on the mode spectrum (the a₀ Fibonacci well, gcd(13,120) = 1, maximally detached from geometric symmetry). The photon couples matter to matter. The EM coupling reads the matter well.

The grid: Photons are bosons. Couplings are squared amplitudes. They live on the 60R-grid (|I| = 60, the bosonic projection of |2I| = 120). So 13/120 becomes 13/60.

The exponent: 1/60 = 1/|I|. One grid step. Λ uses the full hierarchy (exponent 1). α uses one-sixtieth. The fine structure constant is literally the fine structure of the cosmological constant: the vacuum hierarchy resolved at its grid limit. No cap.

The hierarchy: α is constant across epochs. Epoch-independent observables reference Ω_Λ (fixed). Epoch-dependent ones reference Ω_H (evolving). Same selection rule that separates Λ from a₀.

What it means

Both Λ and α reference the same hierarchy:

Λ · ℓ_P² = Ω_Λ⁻¹ · C(1/2) (full hierarchy, exponent 1)

α = Ω_Λ^(-1/60) · C(13/60) (one grid step, exponent 1/60)

The ratio of log-scalings: log(α)/log(Λ · ℓ_P²) ≈ -2.13/-121.7 ≈ 1/57, close to 1/60. The offset comes from C(13/60) ≠ C(1/2). The coupling constant measures how much hierarchy one quantum of exchange crosses.

At the Planck scale, Ω → 1, and α → C(13/60) ≈ 0.79. Order unity. All couplings converge. This is not grand unification through a larger gauge group. It is the hierarchy collapsing as the bounded domain shrinks to a point.

The horizon

The same machinery that produced α contains the entire particle mass spectrum.

The Yang-Mills paper (post 09) established: 9 irreps of 2I, dimensions {1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6}. Three isolated vacua. The McKay decomposition is a mass ladder: which irrep first appears at which spin-j level determines spectral position.

The Alpha paper established: E₈ exponents {1, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29} are the natural grid positions. Each produces a specific observable value via C(e_k/d) × Ω^(-p/60).

The Waltz (post 10) established: μ_Λ ≈ 2.25 meV is the vacuum floor. The neutrino sector sits on the first rungs.

Assembly: 9 irreps × 3 vacua = 27 entries. Each has a computable j_first, an E₈ exponent, and a grid position. The mass formula is constrained by everything already derived: it must recover α at well 13/60, Λ at the antinode, neutrino masses at the floor, and the Yang-Mills gap at 4/R². The computation is finite. The room has been surveyed. The instruments have been catalogued.

The future

Exploring how 1D radial sampling (𝜌), native 2D angular reception (𝜃, 𝜙), and 1D temporal flow (𝜏) construct the human perception of volume. Complementary to General Relativity's spacetime: (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧, 𝑡) ↔ (𝜌, 𝜃, 𝜙, 𝜏).

The score is still being written.
