How to enable IPv6 on OSMC, and a plea for upstream to stop disabling IPv6 by default.
I'm a new user of LibreELEC, not OSMC. Nevertheless, since the projects both inherit a codebase from OpenELEC, I'm posting information about this 2013 design decision which affects them all: purposely disabling IPv6.
First, here is the procedure to permanently/persistently enable IPv6 on an installed OSMC. It's based on the same procedure for LibreELEC, except with changes for OSMC's different credentials (username osmc) and security (sudo).
- After installation, SSH into the box. This will require enabling SSH in setup. The default credentials for OSMC are username
osmcand passwordosmc. sudo connmanctl servicesto find out the name of the network interface in use. For example, my Ethernet interface isethernet_aa0004affdca_cable. As you can see, the name is just the adapter's unique MAC address (EUI-48).sudo connmanctl config ethernet_aa0004affdca_cable --ipv6 auto. Substitute in the name of your network interface that you obtained in the step before this one.
That's all. The setting will be permanent on this installation. The information is in That should mean that even if you copy /storage/.cache/connman/* under the specific network adapter name./storage to other OSMC installations, that they won't automatically get IPv6 enabled, because their network adapter names will be different.
Edit: I've been informed that connman persistent configuration in OSMC is stored in /var/lib/connman, so I'm removing the storage information for now. Again, I haven't confirmed this first-hand on OSMC -- I'm inferring from LibreELEC.
Finally, here is the background, and a follow-up I made in the IPv6 subreddit.
I'm requesting that the OSMC, LibreELEC, and OpenELEC projects simply remove the old patch to disable IPv6 that was put in OpenELEC in 2013. I have no idea what the intention was there, but in 2013 it was already well past time to not flatly disable IPv6 by policy.
