3 prompts that improve your essay (without replacing you)
Most students use ChatGPT like a microwave: push button, get food. That's how you get caught.
Use it like a writing coach instead. Here are three prompts that actually help.
Prompt #1: The clarity check
"I'm trying to say [your main argument]. Here's my current paragraph: [paste paragraph]. Does this paragraph clearly communicate my argument? If not, what's missing?"
Why this works:
You stay in control. AI just tells you where you're being unclear. Like a friend saying "I don't get this part."
Prompt #2: The transition doctor
"Here are two paragraphs from my essay. The first paragraph ends with [last sentence]. The second begins with [first sentence]. Suggest 3 possible transition sentences that connect them logically."
Why this works:
Transitions are hard. AI is good at them. You choose the one that fits. You write everything else.
Prompt #3: The counterargument generator
"My thesis is: [your thesis]. What are the three strongest possible objections to this argument? For each objection, suggest one piece of evidence someone might use."
Why this works:
Good essays engage with opposing views. AI can brainstorm objections faster than you can. Then you decide which to address and how.
What never to prompt:
❌ "Write my essay about X"
❌ "Paraphrase this entire paragraph so it sounds different"
❌ "Find 5 sources about Y" (it will invent them)
Use these three prompts tonight. Your essay gets better. You stay the author. Fair trade.
