This Bloomberg [piece ](https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2026-08-26/to-working-class-voters-affordability-isn-t-just-about-costs?utm_source=website&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=copy)makes a useful distinction.

Both liberal college grads and working-class voters care about “affordable basics.” But they often mean different things.

For college grads, affordability tends to mean prices: housing costs, childcare costs, healthcare costs, rent.

For working-class voters, affordability also means wages, jobs, and opportunity. As the article puts it: nothing is affordable if you do not have a good job.

That is the K-shaped economy in political form.

The credentialed class often experiences plutonomy as high prices and blocked access.

The working class experiences it as weak bargaining power, low wages, job insecurity, and rising basic costs.

Same affordability crisis, different position in the hierarchy.

The opinion piece summary done by Bloomberg AI

* Democrats need to focus on affordability, with 61% of Americans skimping at the grocery store and housing and childcare being unaffordable for many college grads.
* The affordability crisis reflects not just high prices but low wages, with increasing wages being a top priority for Latino and White working-class respondents and all Black voters.
* Democrats should use a simple, consistent message that connects with working-class voters, such as promising an economy that rewards hard work, and explain policies in concrete terms to improve their lives.

Affordability means prices to elites, wages to workers
