Feed Tag Friday: what to look for beyond crude protein
Crude protein matters, but it does not tell the whole story. Two feeds can list the same crude-protein percentage and still perform differently because protein sources, digestibility, amino-acid balance, energy, minerals, vitamins, and feeding directions differ.
When you compare tags, check:
-
Intended bird and life stage. Starter, grower, layer, breeder, broiler, and maintenance feeds are designed for different jobs.
-
Amino acids. Methionine and lysine are often more informative than crude protein alone because birds need usable amino acids, not just a total-protein number.
-
Calcium and phosphorus. Layer-level calcium is not automatically right for growing birds or every adult bird.
-
Fat and fiber. These give clues about energy density and how much of the ration is structural material.
-
Feeding directions. A good formula can underperform if it is diluted with scratch grains, treats, or excess supplements.
-
Freshness and storage. Heat, moisture, pests, and long storage can damage feed quality.
-
The whole flock context. Species, age, production goal, intake, environment, water, and health all matter.
If you want help reading a tag, post a clear photo with personal or purchase information removed. Include species, age, purpose, what else is fed, and the question you are trying to answer.
