Seasonings Are the Most Underrated Prep Nobody Talks About
Everyone focuses on rice, beans, and water. Nobody talks about what makes any of that actually edible for weeks on end.
Food fatigue is real. Eating plain rice and beans every day during an already stressful situation breaks people mentally faster than almost anything else. Seasonings are what stand between a miserable survival situation and meals your family will actually eat without complaining.
The good news is spices are cheap, lightweight, last for years, and take up almost no space. There's zero excuse not to have a solid seasoning stockpile.
The basics to start with are salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, paprika, cayenne, Italian seasoning, and bay leaves. That combination alone turns plain rice and beans into something that actually tastes like food. Add some bouillon cubes and soy sauce packets and you have flavor in every direction.
Hot sauce is slept on as a prep. Bottles last forever, add serious flavor to anything, and cost almost nothing. Same with honey — natural sweetener, antimicrobial properties, genuinely indefinite shelf life.
Dollar stores are the move here. Seasonings at dollar stores are a fraction of grocery store prices and the quality is perfectly fine for long term storage. A full spice collection costs you maybe $15 to $20 if you shop smart.
Store everything in a cool dark place and most dried spices stay potent for 2 to 4 years easily. Whole spices last even longer.
What seasonings are in your stockpile right now? Any underrated ones this sub should know about?
