I recently stumbled upon a lesser-known account of Aleister Crowley’s time in Russia, often referred to as *“The Fun of the Fair.”*

At first glance, it sounds like a simple travel experience — visiting a fair, observing people, taking in the environment. But the more I looked into it, the more it felt… off.

Instead of describing a normal fair, the account comes across as strangely disorienting:

* The atmosphere feels overwhelming and distorted
* People and events seem exaggerated or difficult to interpret
* There’s this constant sense that something isn’t quite right

What makes it interesting is that nothing explicitly “supernatural” happens — yet the entire experience feels unsettling.

It made me wonder:
Was this just culture shock and unfamiliar surroundings?
Or could it have been shaped by his own psychological state at the time?

Or maybe it’s just one of those stories that gets stranger the more you think about it.

I actually covered this in a recent episode on *Randomness Reloaded*, but I’m more curious to hear what others think.

👉 How would you interpret an experience like this?
👉 Have you ever been somewhere that felt completely normal… but somehow wrong at the same time?

Would love to hear your thoughts.
