Spotlight best wireless earbuds OnePlus Buds Z2 worth the hype?
Testing out the OnePlus Buds Z2 (model 5481100085) over the past couple of weeks has been an interesting journey. I’ve used them during workouts, gaming sessions, and even those long, tedious phone calls with my relatives. At a glance, these wireless earbuds are packed with features that seem almost too good for the price range. But as always, there were some quirks worth noting.
Design and Comfort
The sleek, minimalist design of these earbuds caught my eye immediately. Offered in a glossy obsidian black, they seamlessly blend practicality and style. The earbuds sit comfortably in the ear, thanks to their lightweight build and the snug eartips. I’ve worn them during a couple of runs and sweaty gym sessions, and they stayed put without the annoying need to constantly readjust mid-movement. Their IP55 water and sweat resistance is a huge relief for someone like me who sweats as if I just finished a triathlon.
Audio Quality and Performance
When it comes to sound, the Buds Z2 delivers bold audio that can rival some higher-end brands. The dynamic driver setup combined with Dolby Atmos produces deep bass and crisp treble, making music, podcasts, and Netflix marathons sound fantastic. Listening to my EDM playlist felt like a mini rave in my ears. However, I noticed that for certain genres like classical music, the balance could feel slightly heavy on the bass side.
Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode
The ANC feature on these earbuds is surprisingly solid. While commuting or sitting near an overly chatty coworker, the noise-cancelling capacity of up to 40 dB helped me block out distractions effectively. However, when I switched to Transparency Mode, I could hear my surroundings without taking the earbuds off. It’s handy for quick grocery store trips or when walking through city streets. Occasionally, I did feel that the transition between ANC and Transparency Mode wasn’t perfectly seamless, but it didn’t ruin my experience.

Battery Life and Charging Convenience
For someone who uses earbuds daily, battery life matters. With a whopping 38-hour battery life, I found myself charging them almost never. A 10-minute Quick Charge powers them for 5 hours, which is brilliant for forgetful folks like me who only remember to charge their gadgets in dire situations. The charging case itself is compact and easily slips into my backpack or even jeans pockets.
Touch Controls and Pairing
I love that the touch controls make these earbuds feel futuristic, but there is a slight learning curve. The controls handle tasks like skipping tracks, adjusting volume, and answering calls effectively once you get the hang of them. Paired with my Android phone instantly; the Google Fast Pair feature is a lifesaver. iPhone users can download the HeyMelody app to get similar functionality. Still, I can imagine the setup process could be less intuitive for less tech-savvy users.
Good Points
• Durable IP55 water and sweat resistance make them gym-friendly.
• ANC and Transparency Mode enhance usability across various settings.
• Detailed sound profile with noticeable bass and crisp highs.
• Excellent 38-hour battery life with quick charging capabilities.
Negative Attributes
• Slight imbalance in sound quality for certain music genres.
• Transparency Mode transitions could feel more fluid.
• Touch controls are not super intuitive for first-time users.
Competing Products
Comparing the Buds Z2 with similarly priced options like Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, the OnePlus model holds its ground well. The Galaxy Buds provide a unique bean-shaped design that some adore, but their ANC isn’t quite as effective. On the other hand, Apple’s AirPods (non-Pro) offer decent sound clarity but lack water resistance, making them less versatile outdoors. In terms of battery life, the Buds Z2 outperforms both Samsung and Apple’s offerings significantly, making it a leader in endurance.
Smart Spending
For a pair of wireless earbuds sitting at this price point, the OnePlus Buds Z2 certainly packs a punch. Given their combination of long battery life, ANC, and premium build quality, I feel they strike a terrific balance between features and cost. Of course, there are minor caveats, but the pros vastly outweigh any nitpicks.
