What size robot mower do you need for 1/4, 1/2, or 1 acre?

Desk Research

Start with the amount of grass, not the lot size.

A one-acre property does not automatically need a one-acre mower. The house, garage, driveway, patio, pool, beds, woods, and every other no-mow area come out of the calculation.

For reference:

  • 1/4 acre is 10,890 square feet
  • 1/2 acre is 21,780 square feet
  • 1 acre is 43,560 square feet

Trace every patch of grass the mower must maintain. Add the front, side, and back lawn together, even if they are separate zones. Do not count hardscape or areas that will be excluded from the map.

Here is a simple example. A half-acre parcel contains 21,780 square feet. If the house, driveway, patio, beds, and wooded section take up 8,700 square feet, the actual mowable area is about 13,080 square feet, or 0.30 acre. That is the number to use when comparing mowers.

The acre rating does not tell the whole story

Capacity can change with the navigation pattern. Husqvarna's June 2026 manual rates its 410iQ, 420iQ, and 440iQ for 0.25, 0.5, and 1 acre with irregular mowing. The same three models are rated for 0.5, 1, and 2 acres with systematic EPOS mowing.

That is one product family, not a rule for every brand. It shows why the mowing mode behind the headline acreage matters.

The same manual gives approximate irregular-mowing rates of 990, 1,430, and 2,240 square feet per hour. It calculates about 11 scheduled hours per day for a 410iQ to maintain roughly 10,700 square feet. Husqvarna also says those estimates assume a flat, open work area. Slopes and many obstacles require more scheduled time.

One charge is not the same as total lawn capacity

A robot mower normally works, charges, and resumes. Mammotion rates the YUKA mini 2 1000H for a quarter-acre lawn, but says one full charge covers about 0.06 acre depending on grass height and mowing speed. It then returns to the dock.

Battery runtime by itself is therefore a poor sizing shortcut. Compare total area capacity, mowing pattern, charging time, and the hours you are willing to let it operate.

What reduces usable capacity

The published limit becomes harder to reach when the mower has to deal with:

  1. Slopes and frequent obstacle avoidance
  2. Several zones and long travel routes
  3. Narrow passages or difficult docking approaches
  4. Dense, wet, or fast-growing grass
  5. Rain delays and sprinkler windows
  6. Daytime-only operation because of children, pets, wildlife, or neighbors

If your measured grass area sits close to a mower's published ceiling, compare the next capacity class before buying. There is no universal buffer that works for every yard. A flat rectangle and a divided, wooded lawn of the same size are different jobs.

Use the return period carefully

Confirm the seller's exact return rules before opening or activating the mower. A return window does not always mean an operated mower can be returned.

If lawn testing is allowed, use the first few days to map every zone, run the steepest area and narrowest passage, and confirm the mower can return to the dock from each section. Use the same daily hours you plan to allow long term. Record unfinished areas, rescues, and failed docking attempts while there is still time to make a decision.

If you are sizing one now, add your actual grass area, state or region, number of zones, steepest slope, and daily mowing window. Owners, please include the exact model, model year, and whether it regularly finishes without help.
